Alan Pean- Collective Statement from Healthcare Professionals

I have known Alan and the Pean family since he was 10 as their eye doctor and family friend. Alan was his usual gentle, kind and respectful self when he stopped by my office to pick up his contact lenses on the way to Houston last week. I am saddened and outraged at the turn of events to this amazing, compassionate and gentle family, whose kindness and generosity knows no boundaries.. how can you shoot an unarmed PATIENT?! that is horrifying

Healthcare facilities have many ways to control combative patients. Guns should never be part of the staff polices and procedures.

As a cardiovascular technologist, I see the value in protocols that not only protect our patients, but also protect us workers. That being said, what this hospital has allowed is inexcusable. I believe the charges ought to be dropped, and those security officers should be fired and prosecuted.

Not a medical professional but I would like to think that better work can be done to address what is likely a growing epidemic of environmentally/chemically induced mental illness.

As a mental health nurse, I am horrified of what I just read. What this hospital did is horrendous and goes against ALL protocol when dealing with an aggravated patient. I feel like the hospital should do some reorganizing of their staff, clearly some people do not know how to do their job.

NEVER should a gun be fired by security in a hospital.

I have known the Peon family since junior high school and as a health care professional, I am personally outraged by this violence in a place reserved for healing and doing no harm. Prayers sent to Alan and the Peon family.

Nothing excuses using a stun gun let alone a firearm to subdue a patient in a hospital. Denying access to family members only adds to the negligence of the institution. That charges are being pressed against the victim is beyond horrifying. And under no circumstances should an off duty officer be considered a "public servant" while on a separate job. Both "security officers" should be charged with assault if not attempted murder. I wouldn't take a dog to that hospital after seeing how unwed labor intensive mothers were treated four decades ago.

I am a RN by training with 25+ years of experience. It is our duty to protect our patients and give them the very best care possible under any circumstances. Many times over the years I have worked with agressive patients and using a gun (against an unarmed) patient has never been thought of as a treatment option. My heart aches for all the person's involved in this including the officer and health care team. We pray for our Country and for peace. Special prayers will be said for this young man, his friends and family.

Inexcusable Armed security officers, using their weapons as treatment for agitated, delirious or "difficult to control" patients is outrageous and the hospital and that individual are absolutely responsible for the patient's injuries

Security personnel at a hospital need to be required to be certified in crisis intervention . De-escalation not escalation of violence needs to be always emphasized.

My best wishes to Alan and his family. May we never forget the oath we have taken and continue to serve those in need of healthcare.

Having worked in a hospital as a pharmacy tech. I can tell you of so many types of drugs that can be used to sedate a patient, and I can assure you that a bullet to the chest isn't one of them.

Me siento totalmente indignada por el trato que ha recibido Alan. El es un joven 100% honesto al igual que toda su familia. Estoy en contra del abuso cometido contra El y mi apoyo es todo para la familia PEAN. Primero que nada pido a Dios por la salud de Alan y segundo se haga justicia.
