Alan Pean- Collective Statement from Healthcare Professionals

Working in the hospital this happens all the time. And no one has been shot. There are other means that can be taken, without causing harm to anyone. But maybe organization is the key. Or the lack of.

Absolutely unconscionable actions by hospital security. There are plenty of ways to deal with disoriented and violent patients without shooting them.

I am appalled beyond belief this has happened.

More than deeply saddened that a gun was used in a hospital by hospital staff.

Stop police brutality enough is enough.

I hope I speak for everyone in the medical community that we stand behind the Pean family 100% There are ways to restrain, subdue and calm the patient...WITH OUT A GUN!!!! The fact that this young man is being charged with assault is the most ridiculous thing I've heard. Prayers for a speedy recovery! We're with you all the way!!!

I do not know Mr. Pean personally, but I have worked in a hospital setting, and the circumstances under which this could have happened seem unimaginable and indefensible.

I'm appalled at the escalation of behavior that led to the shooting of a patient. I hope the hospital and its security will be held accountable.

In my country criminals sometimes shoot patients in hospitals, but not cops. I don't know what was thinking the person who called the police in that hospital. A police like that is dangerous, not only in a hospital but also in every place.

My prayers go to Alan Christopher Pean, and his family, and to all of us who are traumatized by this event, and the trend we see in the USA.

This violence must end.

I will Christopher and family members in my prayers. I hope they find answers soon to this awful true tragedy.

This is why people like me, a person with bipolar disorder, are afraid of seeking help when struggling through a crisis. We are kidnapped, abused, exploited, neglected, blamed, beaten and shot. We are under threat from the police, mental health professionals and medical personnel when these are the people we are told to turn to for help. The danger is ten fold for the black members of our community who are viewed, not just as a nuisance but as less than human. Alan Pean didn't know any better. His break was sudden and, having no prior experience, he went trustingly into the hands of people he had no reason to fear. I wish him and his family strength and luck through these trying times. I hope they can create change so that we, the mentally ill, can stop living in fear.

Firearms have no place in the management of patients, whether psychiatric or otherwise. There are well established safe procedure for managing agitated patients so that an assessment can be done while maintaining safety for all.

Mental health is not treated in this country. It is warehoused. Sad.

To do no harm- you all need to rethink how to handle these disturbing situations. God be with the young man and his family.

This is beyond an outrage, Alan you have our support. Our prayer is that justice is served in this ordeal so that such a tragedy never reoccurs.

Is there no safe place for us to go anymore to have our basic human needs met?
