this action of shooting a patient indicates a profound lack of training of the hospital personnel. I regret not learning the details of exactly what was occurring when he was shot. I can barely imagine a scenario where using a gun as an intervention might be considered, the patient engaged in a life threatening behavior to another patient for example but even in such a circumstance good training should have directed them to de escalate the situation and find a way to take him down and mediacate the patient.

This tragedy can happen to any of us. This hospital did not have a well-trained staff to respond to Alan's mental status. Therefore, they had to call the police who themselves were not trained either to recognize that Alan was just a patient seeking help rather than being violent. I am pretty sure Alan will recover well from his injury. Then, he should demand justice and we should all learn that some hospitals are not trained to accomodate patients very well. As a dental student, I experienced the same thing when I was suffering of a second degree burn screaming for help in the emergency and the nurse taught I was crazy. They are just insensitive and not understanding of the realities of human pain.

Having personally worked in a psychiatric unit and knowing firsthand what it feels like to be attacked by a patient; Alan's treatment was unacceptable. There are appropriate methods to dealing with an aggressive patient and shooting one will never be part of those methods.

I stand in agreement of this petition! I am totally aghast that something like this can occur in a place of refuge, for a young man seeking care for his failing mental health! This is a tragedy on so many levels and speaks to the urgent need in law enforcement for re-training. I pray for the family and this young mans continued recovery both physically and mentally.

As a neurologist with expertise in autoimmune encephalitis, I regularly deal with teenagers with violent mental status changes. These patients can be safely physically and pharmacologically restrained, assuming the hospital takes care to recognize the situation. Based in the information given, the failure of the hospital to do so for the patient is negligent.

No where in the protocol for an agitated patient does the algorithm include shooting someone in the chest. To break protocland then treat him as a criminal is the worse case of cya Ihave ever heard of. Something must be done.Prayers for a speedy recovery and help for what caused this acute decompensation.

NO matter what this UNARMED patient said or did, there is NO excuse for shooting him. Medical and physical restraints should have been MORE than adequate to subdue him. He wanted HELP. This is the most blatant abuse of trust and power.
