Alan Pean- Collective Statement from Healthcare Professionals

I am so outraged and hurt by what has happened to Alan. I am even more shocked that he was charged with a crime while his life hang in the balance. My prayers to the family and my promise that we will stand with you against this injustice.

Praying for Alan, his family, and his speedy recovery.

Should have called a doctor not an off duty policeman.

There are many other solutions to manage acute psychiatric illness or combative patients. Never in my 11 years of medical experience have I ever seen a patient shot!

This is a travesty! I have seen patients that required 10 personnel to restrain and never have I ever seen a gun pulled. I cannot believe that it would ever be considered an option in the hospital.

My prayers go out to the family..I have known dr PEAN professionally for many years.. They are a giving and helping family . They did no deserve to go through any of this

Officers need training in how to safely recognize and manage a mental health emergency- not through the use of force, but by facilitating access to psychiatric care.

This is a disgrace to the medical community. I have never seen guns in my hospital unless I imagine if it was hostage crisis or patient with a gun. My prayers to this young man and his family. I'm so sorry the way you were treated and how this hospital is trying to justify this unacceptable, unimaginable and barbaric action.

We pray for this kind of atrocity to finally end. Too many of our children, brothers and friends have been victimized already.

Every story has two sides and we heard the patients one first but barring him being armed and threatening others no justification exists to shoot a patient.

This is outrageous and is another case of police brutality. I am sickened that this horrific act of violence took place AGAIN, when will it end!!!

This is absolutely disgraceful. As someone who works in the front lines of Mental Illness I would never EVER consider using weapons like a gun on an ill patient. Antipsychotics and benzodiazepines are very effective and humane. I am disgusted and saddened at the treatment in my state of practice and will continue to educate the public about Mental Illness, a brain-based disease.

40 years a nurse, 20 years an ER nurse, this is absolutely reprehensible. I, and my compatriot nurses, never required a patient to be shot or teased. Talk, physical subduing if needs be, medication, is all we ever required to assist a patient in crisis. If you cannot do your job without shooting someone, then find another endeavor. Medicine is not for you. Security,I use the term loosely, should be employed for crowd control and patient safety.

Wrong is wrong....

We are too comfortable with police brutality in this country. This latest incident shows just how perverse our view for the role of law enforcement has become. They should not have the right to shoot so freely. They are public servants, here to protect and serve those who can and also those who cannot protect themselves. In no other developed country would this be ok. Nowhere else would a society tolerate a psych patient being shot, then criminally charge and their family being treated so poorly. We as a people cannot continue to let this attitude go on.

I'm appalled by the actions of the police officers in this situation. There's absolutely NO reason a patient should be gunned down in a hospital while seeking medical treatment. Thank God Alan is alive and on his way to recovery. I'll continue to pray for the Pean family.
