It is sickening that firearms are used to solve problems that can easily be solved other ways. There is no excuse to ever shoot a patient of a hospital who is unarmed

Deeply saddened by the thoughtless act and lack of compassion of the officer involved who severely harmed an individual and did not allow medics to treat the individual.

Thoughts and prayers with you Alan. The use of guns has absolutely no role in the hospital setting. It's appalling you were treated as such, and I can only hope the situation is recognized and system changed before this happens again.

In no way should a person in Behavioral Healthcare be treated as an unknown threat encountered on the street by cops. My God. What if a person had dementia, mental retardation, or brain lesions resulting in "combative" behavior in a hospital or Healthcare facility? There are medical and psychological tools to manage SYMPTOMS. These officers had no business providing CARE to a PATIENT because they had absolutely no training let alone aptitude for such a task. Policy and procedures need a major overhaul immediately at this hospital to protect vulnerable patients from untrained security personnel with or without weapons.

I deal with children and young adults with mental illness all the time. Some patients are very challenging. I take pride in that I have found that with education and patience it is possible to calm and effectively deal with even the most distressed patient with dignity and lack of force. I am increasingly shocked that the response to these patients has been an escalation of brute force and violent approaches to this common problem. What happened to the humanity we were responsible to provide these patients. When did them become criminals and why?

This unbelievable and sad. We are there to care of patients not shoot them. There are millions times patients are combative and aggressive and we have been able to de escalate the situation. What worries me that the courts don't really know how hospitals function. I hope they speak to some experts.
