I am the parent of a 10 year old girl with Autism and possible early onset Schizophrenia. At 7 years old she felt like she had to run away to her behavioral specialists office to escape a perceived threat.... The staff attacked her and restrained her violently. She swung her head to protect herself and kicked. The school principal called the police BEFORE calling me. She was handcuffed and put into a police car with one window cracked approximately 1 inch. The police officer would not allow me to speak with her, touch her, or take her to the hospital myself. Everyone in my family has been adversely effected by this. Our society has to STOP criminalizing mental health condition. I'm so sorry for anyone experiencing this!

After hearing this story on American Life, i feel that the blame lies with the hospital staff whom failed to acknowledge obvious signs of mental illness, ignored the patient's father who is a physician, and failed to place Mr Pean in proper a behavioral health facility.
The fact that the police used lethal force on an unarmed individual is also inappropriate. I work in a level one trauma center, and face many aggressive, mentally ill patients. While these patients can be dangerous, tenuse of deadly force in a two on one confrontation (also highly inappropriate that there was no medical staff in the room with the officers) seems to me to be excessive.
There were several mistakes made in this incident, from hospital staff, to the police officers involved in the confrontation.
I admit I'm often a callous, and unperturbed person, and I'm used to violence and confrontations in the healthcare setting, again I work in a trauma center. After hearing the story, I'm outraged, and I find this incident to be unacceptable, especially after hearing that the innitial comment of the CEO was that he stood by the results of the incident and if faced with it again, the same result would insue.

As a parent of mentally ill family members, a member of the creative community where a significant number of artists suffer from mental illness, as a community member who associates hospitals as a resource and sanctuary and sacred healing center this is a devastatingly crushing and frightening story. We should not need petitions to acquire and safeguard rights that belong to all humans.

Our justice system is truly broken when citizens are shot in places they seek for protection and nothing is done to make sure it doesn't happen again. Christopher was treated like a criminal instead of an innocent patient with a disease. Shameful!

I myself have been refused treatment of Houston, TX hospitals and clinics due to me being an African-American woman. Trying to kill off blacks in hospitals is unacceptable.
