Keep Safe And Legal Reproductive Access For North Alabama

The Alabama Womens Center For Reproductive Alternatives has been forced out of their current location by new legislation signed into law recently. The Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers, or TRAP, laws required us to adhere to the regulations that require us to become an ambulatory surgical center. This would mean major renovations to our little building downtown that despite all of our efforts we just couldn't make work. So we started our search, and found a building that was already set up to meet those requirements, which isn't as easy as it seems. But because staying compliant with the law is a priority for us, we are surrendering our license for our Madison Street location and making the changes to our new building so we can get a new license and resume performing reproductive care for the women in our area.
However, the proposed new location is causing a bit of a stir. There is a perception that by moving to Sparkman Drive on the North side of Huntsville we are now targeting specific groups. And then there the issue of it being near a school. Now we have a new hurdle, if there weren't enough already. The people of North Huntsville are being led to believe by the anti-choice group that this is going to be detrimental somehow by it being a few miles closer to them than our current location. They have started a NIMBY campaign in an attempt to prevent our reopening.
As of Friday, women will have to drive to either Nashville or Tuscaloosa to have access to an abortion. This is unacceptable for such an developed metro area. So if you believe that the right for every woman to have a say in their reproductive care, over their bodies, and who they choose for OB/GYN services in Huntsville is more important that someones idea that a sign that says WOMENS CLINIC will magically make the women in North Huntsville get more abortions and taint the minds of children that might get a small glimpse behind the giant fence we are building, please sign our petition.
