As a victim of sexual assault on campus it took everything I had not to tear down the poster when I saw it appear in my residence hall lobby. Yes, if people what to read the book or watch the movie that is there personal choice. However, what this movie does is makes what happened to me okay. It makes it not a big deal, if anything it praises it. Is that really what we want people to be learning? It makes me very uncomfortable that this is coming to campus. Normally the movies are the highlight of my friends group weekends. Not this time... I ask that you think about what you are reading, think about what you are viewing, what it really means for you and the people around you. Actions speak louder than words. Take a stand. Be a difference. Don't condone these behaviors.

It is not consistent for our campus to simultaneously advocate against sexual violence while also promoting this film. I urge anyone who believes sexual assault and violence must end to refuse to support this film and the message it sends. Every human being has dignity and deserves to be treated with respect. That includes not being debased or abused through sexual assault, violence, or sadomasochism.

We cannot be silent about sexual violence and we cannot continue to minimize the problem. We need to speak up and speak out for those who are in abusive relationships and for those who no longer see the hope of getting out of those relationships or getting away from the abuse. So many individuals who are in abusive relationships come to believe that abuse is all they are worth and that abuse is what they deserve. Please, don't let this issue continue to go unheard.

The irony is at the forefront but not amusing in the least. Please keep sharing this petition so our campus can have a united front. UWSP cannot take a positive stand in both of these things simultaneously, it's just hypocritical. Which will it be?
