A PETITION TO BAN HAND HELD CELL PHONE AND TEXT MESSAGING WHILE DRIVING . HEATHER\'S LAW On January 3, 2008, Heather Hurd, of Abingdon Maryland and Davenport Florida was traveling to meet her parents at Disneys wedding planner when she was killed instantly by a tractor trailer driver. Hand held cell phone use and text messaging while driving is at a all time high and is increasing every year. Our daughter Heathers death was needless, preventable and unnecessary. We no longer accept these dangerous practices and want the Federal Government or individual states to be pro-active and not reactive as the use of these devices increases. We demand that the lawmakers of this nation immediately pass a ban on hand held cell phone use and text messaging while driving . except in the case of emergency and make Heathers Law a reality. A donation is not required to sign this petition!

Coming from a truck driver. I see it every single day. People are obsessed with their screens and not the road.

So tired of seeing people swerving in their lanes in traffic just to check a text. Its selfish and dangerous for everyone.

United States -- Ban it now! On Aug. 29, Richard C. Seigh, 69, of Millville -- my Uncle -- was crossing the street in the 3500 block of South Delsea Drive when he was hit in the southbound interior lane by a black Dodge pickup going 50 miles per hour. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was replying to a text when he changed lanes to where my Uncle was. The man has been charged with death by auto, leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury, hindering an investigation, reckless driving, use of a cellphone while driving and use of a cellphone by a probationary driver, according to police reports. My Uncle died an empty death, a death without meaning -- all on account of some guy who was TEXTING WHILE DRIVING! On average, nine people a day are killed by people who Text While Driving, nationwide. That means that right now 2043 have died nationwide so far this year because of people Texting While Driving. 2043 dead so far. 2043 people who died needlessly. It is beyond my understanding why there are not stricter laws on the books about this with stringent penalties; after all, there has been laws against people driving when intoxicated. Make it the law -- and make it a law with sharp teeth: Prohibit and Punish Texting While Driving. And do it NOW!
