Please allow me to clarify the reason for the benefit changes because the Shops are very deliberate in our attempts to improve the working conditions for all of our employees. The free meals were changed to a discounted meal in order to give dining students the same textbook discount that our student bookstore employees receive. In the past dining employees got a meal on their work shift and bookstore employees got a textbook discount. Now all student employees get both a textbook discount and a meal discount.
In addition while certain restaurants do continue to offer a shift meal to employees, many restaurants have evolved to a meal discount partly to offset rising minimum wages. As of this January, the Shops entry level wages will have escalated a total of 25% over the last 18 months due to minimum wage increases. Management hoped that a 25% wage increase coupled with expanded benefits that are equal for all employees would be perceived as a positive outcome for our student employees. Please understand that this was an expansion of benefits not a reduction of benefits as well as an attempt to create equity within our organization.

I feel it's absurd that free meals for student workers is taken away. Being substituted by a 15% discount is not only unreasonable, yet shows how out of touch the administration is with students financial situation.
I feel this petition should be also shown to the financial sponsors that support long beach state university and the media.

Employees such as myself work very hard to serve the students, faculty, or parents that eat at the dining hall.

Having friends who work for 49er Shops in the residential dining and being a resident myself and watching these students. I know how hard these students work to provide their peers with meals. They deserve a small perk for their hard work

The 15% discount on meals for employees is a joke. Your cost of the food is a very small part of the retail price.
Example: Your cost for a book or T-shirt is a much higher % of it's retail price. There the 15% discount is a much better deal for the workers.
You are still wanting to make a substantial markup on the food you sell to your workers.

Telling employees of your cafeteria to bring their own food is just bazaar.
Not sure what restaurant inspectors would say.

The free employee meal is great program and will lead to a happier and more efficient staff. It shouldn't be taken away!

I can understand the situation because I was always wondering why the dining hall workers look so tired and no smile. As a user of dining hal and a student, I really hope them to get in better condition!

I personally don't go here, but I am also a college student (SDSU, GO AZTECS!) and I know how hard it is to get by on student wages. This is totally unfair to the students working for dining services. CSULB needs to get it together!
