We, the parents of Oaks Hills Elementary’s third grade students are petitioning the Oak Hills Elementary Administration and Davis School District to provide 3, fourth grade classes for the 2018-2019 school year.
Currently there are 61 third grade students at Oak Hills Elementary divided up into 3 separate classes. If, for next year (2018-2019), there are only 2 classes and the numbers stay the same, the classes will include 30, and 31 students. This large number of students combined with the fact that there are an unusually high number of students on IEP and 504 plans requiring special accommodations would result in an unreasonably difficult classroom situation.
Oak Hills Elementary has already tried using just two classes when these students were in the first grade. This created an extremely challenging environment for the students, parents, and teachers. Since increasing to three classes in second and third grade, the students have thrived, academic scores have increased and behavior issues have decreased. Please do not undo the progress that we have made. We need to support our students by keeping 3 classes for our upcoming fourth graders.

The district bureaucrats can try to ignore us but they cannot ignore this surge of pressure from the parents of Oak Hills. We have reached a point where the administration is forced to acknowledge that we will not let them cram thirty kids into a room and watch our children fail. Keep the pressure on these administrators because they are clearly feeling the heat now.

I agree with this petition. I have observed a significantly positive change in many of the students and their behaviors and this is due to having the smaller classes and the teachers who have been so invested in helping them. These smaller class sizes have provided a greater opportunity for more individual attention and direction from their teachers. These students still need and will continue to need the level of help that they have been getting, as there are still serious incidents of physical aggression and other behaviors that need monitoring and direction.
My son has thrived with 3 teachers. You take it back to 2 and we go back to the same problems we had from kindergarten thru second grade. And it wasn’t just my child. All the kids struggled. Even the school psychiatrist was concerned. It was an issue that has been resolved. Don’t hurt our children by dropping a teacher. Our kids deserve the chance to be great.
Having two classes in previous years has shown to be difficult. This grade needs to stay as three classes in order for the kids, and the teachers, to succeed.

Oak Hills has taken pride in saying they want to do what’s needed to help their students to succeed. They’ve even implemented the 7 Habits this year. Will a larger class size parallel those 7 Habits for this group of special kids to succeed their 4th grade? We go to 2 classes and bigger class sizes we are setting our Faculty and Students to fail. And they’ll fail in a bigger jumping off grade that will set the pace for the whole rest of their school career. Is that chance worth it? It’s not for me.
I support having 3 separate classes for the Oak Hills third grade. My grandchildren attend Oak Hills and I look forward to them receiving quality education with less students in a classroom.
Smaller classes are better, don’t combine classes it makes it more stressful for our teachers and less individual time for students.

A class of 30 for this particular group of students has already proven to be very difficult. With the constant disruptions, teachers can't teach and kids can't learn. The effects of large class size on my daughter in this grade in previous years were very negative educationally, socially, and emotionally. If these classes become large again, seemingly small problems that are still present will escalate once again. Let's give teachers and ALL our students a chance to succeed by keeping 3 fourth grade classes next year. Davis County School District's motto is "Learning First!" Let's own up to it.
