The iPads are useful for more than a few summer school classes and independent research over the summer. Yes, it takes time to process, clean, and repair the iPads, but the students should not have to turn in the iPads three months in advance. It is possible to collect the iPads on the day of iPad distribution, so they can be processed after. On the other hand, I also believe that the students should be able to keep their iPads permanently. Three years of technology fees is more than enough to pay for the cost of the newest iPad pro with accessories and extra storage. I understand that the technology fees are used to maintain the internet connection, pay for the insurance, supply the accessories, pay for the high-quality google student accounts, and run the internet filters. However, the three years of fees from each student should be more than enough to pay for an iPad and the other technology fees. Perhaps it is out of the control of the IT department. It is possible that Apple does not allow IT departments to keep the iPads, but the school should fight for the right to keep the iPads if the fees are higher than the cost of the iPads.

I view my iPad as a learning device. I would like to take it with me to college so that I will be able to learn more efficiently.

I need the iPad over the summer because I need to use it for managing my trips for athletic competition purposes and this could be detrimental to my career in the future because this summer is particularly significant to whether I get into college or not. Please reconsider the options and think about what is best for the students. Thank you.

My college counselor wants me to work on my college application over summer. Unfortunately I, along with many others, do not have my own device at home that would be a reasonable way to work on my application.

For the class of 2020, we especially need the iPads over the summer. We have all been encouraged to work on our college essays over the summer, but without iPads, it’s extremely difficult for many of us to find a way to do this. Many of us don’t have access to personal computers or devices at home, and we shouldn’t be expected to go out and buy our own devices just because the school is taking away our iPads. It’s not easy for many of us to find access to public computers either. We have become so dependent on iPads for the last six years because of Iolani’s iPad Initiative. Taking away iPads disrupts our learning at the most crucial time, when we need to be researching colleges and preparing our applications. The removal will hinder our progress towards college applications and cause increased stress when we finally do receive iPads. College essays take a long time to write well, and even if we get our new iPads in early to mid August, thats only two to four weeks to write this essay. IT should consider allowing Seniors to pick up their new iPads earlier in the summer, like in July. This way we will still have time to work on our college essays, but IT can still process our iPads.
