I don’t believe that we should be punished for the wrongdoings of the underclassmen. Because of this, the vast majority of the senior class is taking a major hit which could effect the application process. WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE PREPARING FOR COLLEGE. Allow us to display our maturity and independence by giving us the necessary components to become the best college applicants we can be.

As a college preparatory secondary school, ‘Iolani School should prioritize reasonable needs of their students and faculty over the expenditures and simple convenience. This decision to take back the iPads before summer puts the class of 2020 at a huge disadvantage in the college application process. We are highly encouraged by the CCO to spend time over the summer researching and preparing for college, however this will be extremely difficult for us as MANY students do not have the alternative methods that ITS encourages us to use at home (PCs, MAC, etc).

I think that the iPads are a great addition to our education, and I know that ʻIolani students are very grateful for the privilege of using the devices! Everyone at ʻIolani works hard — students, teachers, staff, and administration. Students, whether or not they are taking summer school classes, would just like to be able to continue to work hard over the summer. Especially when it comes to the class of 2020, students want to dedicate time towards working on college essays, researching colleges, working on passion projects, etc. While the iPads are not absolutely necessary, having access to the ones currently in use would be extremely helpful to us and our families in many ways! My classmates have elaborated on several examples. I am thankful that enrollment in selected summer school classes translates to a later iPad due date, but I think that many of my classmates would also benefit from a later due date (which may allow my classmates to have more study time for final exams because many have not backed up everything on the iPads). I understand that all official actions on behalf of the school are thoroughly discussed and planned; it’s just that the student body would really appreciate it if we were allowed to borrow the iPads for a longer period of time!

I am unable to work on my college essay with anything other than my iPad being that I don’t have a personal device, which will also affect my summer reading. I have become extremely reliant on my iPad because of how much of my life is on it.

Having my iPad over the summer would help a lot keeping track of college apps and being able to work on my college essay!!

Iolani has made students very dependent on the school issued iPads. Many students do not have their own personal devices to do work for college applications, summer reading, or note-taking for summer school courses because Iolani’s iPad initiative hasn’t given any of us a need for another device to do work on. I know all students are very grateful for Iolani’s goal to enhance our learning experience through technology, but taking away our iPads in the summer undermine the premise of the Iolani iPad Intiative. Our learning does not stop after the school year. All students need their iPads to prepare for the upcoming school year and for summer work. It is unreasonable to take something away that teachers and administration have made so crucial to our learning and work process. If this petition cannot convince administration to rethink their decision at least compensate returning students with an alternate device they can work on or move the iPad return date earlier. Thank you.
