Hello,

My name is Jenia Thompson and I am running for 1L Class President for the 2021-2022 academic school year. As President, I would like to focus my attention on the intersectionality of the law school experience in addition to fostering an equitable community that will propel us forward.

What makes law school students unique is the culmination of diverse backgrounds we have. Not only are we a class that made it to law school while amidst a pandemic, but we are also a class of parents, recent graduates, small business owners, and first-generation students.

If elected President, I would like to go forward with celebrating our diversity by acknowledging all our past and present achievements while utilizing our different skills and lived experiences towards building a promising network of astute law professionals.

Prior to my time at Detroit Mercy Law, I served as Grand Valley State University’s Student Senate Vice President for Senate Resources. In this role, I had the responsibility of interviewing candidates interested in being appointed to Student Senate, acting as human resources for the entirety of the 50-person organization, and serving as a secretary. All these roles have given me the tenacity that will make me a successful President if elected.

During my time at Student Senate I have been fortunate enough to build relationships with numerous faculty, administrators, in addition to the President of the University and her Cabinet. With the experience of working with university administrators, I am equipped with the skills of how to present student concerns while finding creative, collaborative methods to remedy them.

My skills of patience, intentionality, and persistence have geared me with the ability to take on new challenges with grace and perseverance. Both of which I will show through my words and actions if elected as President.
