Virginia is planning deep cuts in eduction which will hurt students, teachers and communities throughout the Commonwealth. A 1 percentage point increase in the sales tax would increase revenues by about 1 billion dollars while only adding a penny to each dollar spent by consumers. During a recession it is more beneficial to increase taxes than to cut spending according to several studies. The general assembly is currently in session and discussing the budget. We will deliver this petition to the governor and our local delegates and senators as soon as possible.
I have been reading through the budget drafts all morning and it is honestly exhausting to see how little they care about the actual classrooms. The silence from the governor is frustrating but also predictable so I am currently drafting a letter to send directly to the house floor before they finalize anything.

Schools are already struggling enough. A penny is nothing compared to what our kids lose if these cuts go through.
