Folks…I have been speaking with a few of our ‘98 classmates. I know many/most who have signed here will take issue with what I am about to write…some of you I know well and consider friends, so please don’t take what I am saying as an attack. I certainly am not perfect and have fallen short of God’s Grace many times in my life, so this also isn’t a “Holier than though” speech. I don’t know John and I have to presume that he is a very nice guy since many of our ‘98 classmates support this. If you are not a ‘98 grad then your support should not even be considered. I cannot support this…why? Here are my reasons & questions I pose to you all: 1. He is not a Citadel Graduate and therefore does not have a diploma from The Citadel. 2. The “Long Grey Line” is not something you join just by completing knob year, sophomore year, or even junior year. You must complete 4 years of undergraduate education. 3. Why didn’t John leave school, work and save money for a couple of years and then return to finish senior year? 4. Why did it take 25 years for him to decide he wanted a Band of Gold, or have a friend decide to present this idea to him as a possibility? 5. So can anyone who comes to The Citadel for 2 or 3 years, makes some good friends, but not graduate from our school, petition the BOV for a ring? 6. Does anyone not see how this waters down and minimizes the meaning of being able to receive your diploma, graduate, and turn your ring around at graduation as a true Citadel Grad? 7. Does anyone not see how the whole premise of this could be considered an Honor Violation? 8. Why are we “moving the goalposts”…where is the “line in the sand” where we decide who gets a ring and who doesn’t? I thought it already existed…when you complete 4 years of school at The Citadel and earn your diploma. 9. Would a cut or dropped on request Bond Volunteer be able to go QM a Summeral Guard patch for his blazer? In this day and age where everyone is degrading everything f

I had the opportunity to serve under Major Tucker as my Company Commander. He is a great leader and great man who embodies the core values of The Citadel. A true Citadel Man and a great representation of our institution. We can rest easy knowing he is training future officers that carry the mark of The Citadel. No one more deserving! -- Jonathan Love C Co. 14'

The fact that he has remained loyal and connected to our alma mater through alumni class gatherings and ultimately working and supporting our institutions, is enough for me to support this request.
