It's not always as easy as bringing your adopted baby home from the hospital. Some families have to use part of their leave traveling to another province or country to bring baby home. Some have a very stressful 30 day wait, while others may have weeks or months dealing with medical needs and trying to form attachment to the child. Adoptive parents as well as adoptive children deserve equality!

Bonding with a biological child or adopted child has the same psychological adjustment issues and should be assessed with equal EI benefits.

I am an adopted parent and I am on parental leave from work and going through my own adoption "issues". I am having a hard time accepting the fact that I was not able to get pregnant and the government clearly separates adopted parents from birth parents. I believe it's discrimination. We need the time to bond with the child!

My family was formed by adoption. I think adoptive parents deserve as much time as biological ones!

through the usual stages pregnancy the parents know what is coming and are prepared for it. Often adoptive parents have little or no time to prepare when a child becomes available for them.

Yes, all of my friends who gave birth "recovered" with in days of deliver...to two weeks if cesarean. However things like "attachement" which typically happens immediately at birth or before for that matter... to shortly following, can take much longer after adoption and bring a whole host of other issues birth parents will not need to deal with.

Adopting Parents are taking on a roll that cannot be performed by birth parents which in many cases is "Sprung" upon them. In 3 days my daughter was a parent. Birth parents have a minimum of 9 months to plan ahead. adoptive parents are afforded very little "plan ahead" time. Frankly...the adoptive parent should not only be given the same Mat leave but...More. Current Law is morally unfair. Additional burden to tax payers is more than of offset by the removal the state's financial responsibility for raising a child.

Let's make the rights of all parents equal when it comes to benefits for EI.

Thank You Very Much. As an adoptive Mom - this is a human and civil right that I believe requires attention and equality. I am grateful to be part of this.

Just because you don't give birth doesn't make you any less entitled to the benefits of every other parents.

Its time for a change. There are no favorites in parenting...a hard working birth parent vs another hard working adoptive parent deserve the same amount of time off!

As an adoptive mother, I find this discrepancy between parental leave for adoptive parents and maternity leave incredibly discrimatory. Adoptive children deserve the same amount of time with their parent as biological ones.

both biological and adoptive parents undergi the same anxiety and learning in carung for bew members of the family. Often adoptive parents face additional challenges of physical and emotional trauma of children in care

An adopted child deserves as much time spent with their adopted parents as does a child with its birth parents. Why are they any different? If anything the adopting parent should be given even more time for extra special bonding that that is much needed.

Maternity leave is about families bonding. The "recovery period" takes only a couple of weeks...the bond takes a lot longer!
