I'd like to respectfully add that traditions are at the heart of SPU dorm culture. I'd like to see those cultures engaged and explored for their meaning before you try to change them. Kicking 12 SPU students out of housing for passing down a tradition without actually examining the importance of that tradition and potential harm (?) causes more harm than good.

Why is this even a punishment?! Really? Seems pretty cruel to me. Especially for a university that is supposed to be Christian oriented. Give the boys some community service or something...

Having 5W as my brother floor for two years now, I know that they are a loving and caring group of people. I understand that mistakes are made, but evicting students and forcing them to leave the one place in this community that they feel the safest is the biggest mistake that can be made. 5W has been through so much in the last few years that by inflicting these drastic consequences, community is not only being prevented, but broken. I would hope that as a campus that so greatly emphasizes reconciliation and grace to its students that these beliefs can be shown through actions and not just empty words.

Eviction is not the proper response for these students who have given so much to the university. Let there be a real discussion and conversation around this issue.

SPU is huge on the idea of "restorative justice." I'm not arguing that mistakes were not made, but I feel like this treatment of students who have made mistakes (and all of us do) is not in line with biblical values or the idea of restorative justice. Please change your stance on this matter SPU. Since when do we kick out and give up on our brothers and friends?

Expulsion may benefit the institution's preference for maintaining respectability, but it only harms the individuals whom it is supposed to educate and protect. We attend this great university not only for the ability to carry out our Christian beliefs in a community of our like-minded, but also to be treated by those same values in times when we make mistakes. If the relationship is not reciprocal, then it is hypocritical. Let our brothers back into their residence, and treat them with restorative justice, rather than criminal who are to be excised.

I think that I will go into what does and does not constitute hazing based on the information I've heard (I fully acknowledge I might not have the full story). If these are guys, yelling at them does not constitute hazing, nor does making them hold a ball in front of them for any reasonable amount of time. It's silly and dumb, but it's not eviction-worthy.

Please change the wording to remove the line on "homelessness." The wording suggests that these boys will be living on the street, and compares their experience with thousands of Seattle-ites who experience the injustices of homelessness on a daily basis, which these SPU kids are not.
It is still wrong to evict the 5W guys....everyone loses, the freshman left behind, the 5W sophomores, res life's satisfaction rating......not to mention the perversion of the WA hazing law.

Absolutely ridiculous. If they are evicted from housing they better get all their money back and a guaranteed location in which they could stay at for the same price as the dorms. Either way this is a harsh harsh punishment.

A fine is reasonable, probation maybe, but forcing them out of the dorms with almost no notice is ridiculous and could seriously hurt both their financials and academics, not to mention the impact on the freshmen of 5th west

As a community that represents the love of Jesus, these actions do not. Our mission is to love and to serve. That doesn't mean ignoring inappropriate behavior, it means handling it in such a way that shows love, grace, and understanding - yet still correcting the wrong behavior. I don't know what happened during the traditions 5w were involved with, but leaving young adults without a home (especially while going to such an expensive school) is not the way to go about correcting behavior seen as inappropriate. What example does this show the world about how Christians handle things they don't like? We just throw people on the street? That is not what I believe and if you are calling yourselves a Christian university, the actions taken are not showing the world what it really means to be a follower of Christ. I would reconsider your methods of correction.

This punishment is ridiculous. Unless someone being initiated was severely injured and is in danger having these guys live on the same floor, this is absolutely an overreaction. Fine them or put them on probation, but this is just stupid. There are better, more rational ways to deal with this. Disappointed in res life.
