Residence Life: Reverse Your Decision to Evict 5th West Ashton

As an alumni parent of a recent graduate, I would ask you to reconsider your decision. I believe there are better ways to restore these boys than to kick them out of campus housing. In order to find off-campus housing around SPU, it can take months and can be an exhaustive and expensive process. I believe justice would be better served by having them do community service and labor around the campus. You will be creating an atmosphere of animosity versus an atmosphere of restoration. We have been very generous towards SPU as of late by giving a very nice digital piano to the music department. The reason we did this is because we do believe in SPU's mission. We would ask that you prayerfully consider a different resolution than moving these young men out of campus housing.

If the freshman participated in the tradition voluntarily then there should be no punishment and the punishment issued them was far worse than it should have been.

I would hope that our residence life team would help work towards a constructive solution, rather than destructive, black and white, hardline decisions. This is how I see the choice to evict these boys. I am praying for a more Christ-like resolution in the future.

There must be a more productive way to teach a lesson in this situation. Forcing students (and parents) to scramble for suitable, affordable living misses the mark. The focus becomes the crisis of no place to live. Instead, focus on examination of actions, ownership of wrong doing, and a productive way to make amends.

While I acknowledge that there is laws in our state against gazing, tradition is explained to freshmen as a voluntary bonding activity. Maybe instead of forcing homelessness on these boys, residence life needs to be proactive in explaining what is considered hazing to our student leaders. SPU loves to fine people, place a hefty fine on them but don't leave them homeless in the middle of the quarter. How do you expect students to focus on academics while they are struggling to find somewhere to live? I feel like this is a bit too out of hand.

Come on Res Life. I don't think expelling 12 students is helping the community on 5th Ashton one bit. Don't you think you're overacting A LOT on this one?

As an alum of SPU, I can say that the floor activities are some of my fondest memories, they bond the floor, they help you out of your comfort zone, and are done in love for the sister or brotherhood of whatever given floor they are on. SPU has in the past been to hasty to make choices that will alter students lives very quickly because of someone's uninformed or half known story. Give the boys a chance to speak, a shot to stay, or atleast a minute to figure out a different place to live! Good grief.

I learned here at spu that justice is the right use of power. This is an opportunity to do just that.

While these people did sign an agreement to forego these behaviours, and while I do believe it is the right of the university to want to enforce standards, I absolutely believe that this is not an action worth immediate expulsion. A warning system is perhaps in order here; something to create a level of fairness in terms of weighing the punishment against the crime.

Tradition was one of my fondest memories from dorm life and to make students homeless because of an activity that was optional where students could opt out of it is a ridiculous decision. To haze is an act were you have no option in doing something to be part of a group. This was not the case therefore it was not hazing and removal from housing should not be a punishment nor should this even be a punishable offense.

Taking part in floor traditions/initiation as a freshman at SPU (2014 grad) is one of my most fond memories at school. It was the catalyst for some of my closest friendships and made me feel like I belonged. Res Life's treatment of these 12 students is unwarranted and contradictory to SPU's goal of being a close-knit community.

This is ridiculous!

This is a mockery of actual injustice in the world. Hazing was committed. We know that and we know the consequences of not following school policy. No one is denying that the hazing happened. We all know that it is true. But, the comments comparing this incidence to actual injustice, elevating this petition to that of Tent City 3?? That is going way too far. And it needs to stop.'m not taking a side, I'm just saying that the expression of saving the #12LostBoys from expulsion cannot and should not be compared with other fundamentally more serious world issues.

I was very disappointed to see the issue handled this way, as I have many close friends who used to live on 5w Ashton and who took part in this tradition. Administration is trying to prove a point, and it has been proven. Now it's time to actually care about your students.
