I think this was an unfair, and unjust punishment. Just had dcl on justice and yet we can't even practice what we preach. Come on res life

The fact that other dorms were given briefings on what constituted acceptable tradition AFTER the 5W debacle is tacit admission by the college that the new policies were not disseminated in a clear and concise manner. Furthermore those whom the policies were designed to protect from vicitimization enthusiastically took part in the activities. Not only will I sign this petition, but the begging letters from the Office of University Advancement sends will go straight to the fireplace. I would urge all SPU alumni to do the same. Petitions may be one thing, but when alumni giving decreases. colleges will take notice.

I wish I could sign this petition 1,000 times, not only because I disagree with how SPU Residence Life is handling this situation but also because of the horrible experience I have had with Res Life in the past. During my freshman year at SPU I was dealing with severe depression and decided to admit myself into a hospital for a few days. When I came back to campus a few days later I had to meet with Res Life. During this meeting I was told that they were considering kicking me out of the dorms/school because they didn't want me to "influence other students". I was infuriated that I was being punished for getting myself help, and that Res Life was treating mental illness as if it was something contagious. What I needed in that time was a support system, not the added stress of possibly being kicked out. So I know for a fact that Res Life does not handle situations well because they don't really handle them at all. In my situation and in this current situation they did not care about the well-being of their students. IT WAS A TRADITION, and if Res Life actually cared about their students they would not be giving them a mere 72 hours to find housing. Was this really the best choice, Res Life? Or was it just the easiest choice for you?

This is ridiculous! Students are human, they make mistake too. Of course there should be some punishment, but kicking them out of the dorm is way over the top. Come on man!

The individual who had that alcohol level was actually a freshman, not one of the sophomores. Should we kick him out too? I'm pretty sure Res Life just put him on probation though. This petition is arguing that this punishment has nothing to do with restorative justice. What good will come of this punishment? I think that punishment is fine, and if used correctly can help people change. A .5 blood alcohol level seems to be a lot more life threatening than tradition. If SPU wants to discipline them, I'm fine with that. But discipline them in a way that will be constructive, not destructive.

By kicking out students from their communities for such mundane reasons, SPU Residence Life is ruining the comraderie of Ashton. The sophomores on the floor are leaders, and without these sophomores, 5th west will have no community whatsoever. It is not only unfair to the sophomores on 5th west, but to the freshman who no longer have leadership on their floor. It's a bad first impression to SPU's residence life freshman who are seeing how strict the policies are and how little freedom they do have to carry out floor traditions. For years, 6W has been running the donut run. Why is it just this year that Res Life decides to take away these long-standing traditions? Living in an SPU dorm should be enjoyable. Residents shouldn't have to worry about being kicked out of their dorms for simply participating in floor events.

I graduated from SPU in June of this year and was there when they did the same thing to the RA with her mannequin. This is unjust and not what SPU is about. Actually be Christian and let the boys explain.

As a former resident of 5th Ashton, I know how important community solidarity is to the SPU experience. This punishment is extreme and would have adverse consequences for everyone in Ashton hall. Please reconsider this decision.

I can only say that the actions taken by the officials in charge show the inability to properly address and handle their own ill-informed students in a mature and humane way. It is not in the nature of humans to exile our own for the sake of punishment in a situation that had little to no clear understanding from all parties. Reconsider, and take the initiative to be the adults and developed people we all are capable of being and to be understanding in your own mistakes before punishing others for your own failure to address, inform and handle the new implications of rules and situations regarding those changes, it would be unfair to arrest someone for feeding the homeless if they weren't aware it was against the law a week prior with the only announcements being third hand statements saying "rules are being and have been changed" but no specifics as to how or what can and can't occur without punishment. This is a fault of Res. Life's own and not the students. They performed much less dramatic actions in comparison to what they themselves had to go through a year prior with no punishment to those who made them (not optional participation) partake in the tradition. They were not in the known and cannot be until it is brought to their attention, therefore punishment so severe that it limits their education that they pay highly for is simply out of the question on a morale standing. They are not hurting anybody and their punishment should not be anything that hurts them. Something in the bible we're forced to study here states that someone killing another is subject to the mercy of NOT being killed themselves, this 'punishment' is only a clear statement that they cannot practice what they preach and instead are just as much if not more so in the wrong as the students they deemed so. The punishment is too severe for something as silly as tradition (years of repetition)... This can be handle much more intuitively without the need for damage to the life of 12 bright and h

Things should have been handled differently. As a Christian Foundation, one would think that it would offer a chance for reconciliation instead of condemning 12 young men. If this goes through there will without a doubt be a backlash from the community, both religious and secular.

Please reconsider your decision. Yes, punishment is called for, this is too far and will exacerbate the problem and turn then into martyrs.

The problem is that the criteria used to substantiate this action is very vague. If the school can clearly show willful flaunting of the hazing policy would be accepted. But they CAN'T! Because that is not what transpired.
