1014 Central Local Landmark House

We owned this home from 1976 to 1979, it holds a fond place in our hearts. It was our first home, we had two of our three children here. The home was perfect for our growing family. Thanks for saving it from this typical developer! Sincerely, T Formberg

Save the Witten house! This is a special piece of my family history, let alone Chicago history, and it would be a shame to alter it in any way.

My great great grandfather built this home and I do hope it continues to stay in the Highland Park area. It’s such a representation of our family history.

As the oldest living grandson of William Walter Witten, I totally support any and all efforts to preserve the Witten home at 1014 Central Ave in Highland Park. I seriously doubt that the masterful woodwork done by my grandfather on the interior of the home could be reproduced today.

There is no excuse to tear down this lovely historic building. As usual the developer goes ahead and waits for the city to cave and give them what they want. This city NEVER seems to pay any attention to the wishes of its citizens and I sometimes doubt we have any zoning laws. Look at the “warehouse with terraces” known as McGovern House building or the monstrous building they want to build on the Firehouse property. This is disgraceful and they are turning a lovely city into trash.

Our heritage should be preserved! Especially. such a beautiful house!

Too amazing to destroy

This is my great grandfathers work. It would be awful to lose something so beautiful and with so much history. Something I can show my kids one day

My name is Susan Johnson. This was our Great Great Grandfathers home. James Anthony Witten was my father. What a shame to destroy such a beautiful piece of history.

I am related to the man who poured his blood sweat & tears building the history of Highland Park. Would really be a shame to lose the house & its history. Future generations would miss out on what it looks like tho use your hands to fabricate things without the technology of today & the future. Please help save this wonderful historical home!

I am the great great granddaughter of the original owner of the house. My mother is Janet Witten. Please please save this home as it’s so very historic.

Please save this house for future generations to enjoy, it has the history of an early member to the community, my grandpa, and the craftsmanship he displayed.

Is Landmark status temporary?

Please don't be so foolish as to let them tear this house down. This house was built by my great-grandfather and was lived in by him, as well as my grandfather and father, all lifelong Highland Park residents. Tearing down such a piece of Highland Park history would just be shameful. Please don't let it happen.

Don't destroy your history. Some day you will wish you hadn't.
