The trams are an iconic part of Hong Kong history just like the Star Ferry. They also serve a niche travel need in Central. I myself have used them frequently to avoid a long walk to the nearest MTR station only to take the MTR one or two stops followed by another lengthy walk. Please keep the trams!!!!

The trams are an amazing part of Hong Kong - the locals I know love them. It would be a shame to see a city destroy that part of it's heritage.
