Wear The Change. Support a Student-Led Upcycling & Clothing Swap Club
I went to Thailand a year and a half ago, saw kids and mothers digging through bags of used clothes that were in great condition ready to be thrown out. What shocked me was how locals and tourists walked by as if it was a normal act. Not just that, teenagers will purchase trendy clothes just for them to be thrown out once the trend is over. They will then repeat the same process with the next trend. I realised that I was once one of them, displaying how overlooked the problem of overconsumption and fast-fashion is.
Driven by the urge to raise awareness on overconsumption and sustainable fashion, I wanted to make use of what I'm privileged with to ease the burden of our home, and those who are less privileged than me.
That’s why I founded MINT, Make It New Today, a student-led club where we strive to teach practical alternatives rather than throwing away usable clothes or just simply buying less. We give students the opportunity to learn upcycling skills, exchange clothes they no longer wear and organize school based thrift shops. By making sustainable fashion more accessible to students, we hope to increase their awareness of overconsumption, and give them a chance to take action to wear the change.
Although overconsumption doesn’t seem like it’s directly affecting your local community, there are still millions of people who are already living with the consequences of our waste and environmental degradation. We have the privilege and opportunity to make a difference, consider signing this petition, your signature means supporting our mission, giving clothing a second life and allowing teenagers to be a part of the solution. We are a step closer to lifting the burden of countries that suffer because of our actions.
Sign this petition, and wear the change.
