I have always valued and respected UU principles and actions. I value the equanimity the UU communities strive for. On Oct 7, people were massacred, raped, kidnapped, burned. Please choose a different date. If not, the message is that what happened in Oct 7 was acceptable. This does not negate what has happened to innocents who live in Gaza but instead demonstrates an understanding that Oct 7 was unacceptable.

October 7 is the anniversary of one of the most horrific attacks on Jews in modern history—the massacre of 1,200+ people, the taking of hostages, and the brutal atrocities committed against innocent civilians. For Jewish people, this date carries enormous grief, trauma, and significance. There are 364 other days of the year on which a vigil for Palestinian lives could be held. Choosing October 7, of all dates, feels particularly painful and deliberately provocative.

Choosing the date of the largest massacre of Jewish people since the Holocaust to hold this vigil is not only insensitive but a slap in the face to the Jewish people. This does not seem in keeping with the values the Unitarian Universalist Church supposedly supports. How cruel and deliberate this feels. There is space for grieving the loss of all innocents without dishonoring, and mocking the deaths of the Israelis who perished at the hands of Hamas. Do the right thing, change the date.

I am dismayed that the UU church is holding a vigil for Palestinians on October 7. For Jews, October 7 is not simply another date on the calendar, it is the anniversary of the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust, when more than 1,200 people were murdered and hundreds were taken hostage. Acknowledging Palestinian suffering is very important, but doing so on this date without also honoring the Jewish lives lost and the trauma inflicted on the Jewish community feels painful and alienating.

Palestine does not exist. People in Gaza who have suffered since October 7, 2023, have suffered due to having elected Hamas to govern them. Hamas is the worst thing that could have happened to these people, and if one wants to be consistent, the Vigil should mention Hamas as the cause of the suffering. Israel is willing to help remove Hamas, but many Gazans have been indoctrinated to believe that Hamas (and other bad actors) will one day succeed in removing all Jews from Israel.
