Conference on College Composition and Communication is an excellent forum to meet and discuss ideas that brings writing teachers, students, and all related and interested to it one forum and help create and disseminate knowledge. It must survive.

NCTE's first president was a compositionist (Fred Newton Scott), but it was the broader progressive engagements of the times that gave rise to both NCTE and modern composition studies. Collaborations with local teachers, community leaders and activists are even more urgent today. I hope collaborations with these networks will be considered as folks consider next steps.

Quite some time ago, Writing Studies grew beyond NCTE. It's time to have a discipline-specific professional organization.

CCCC was so inclusive in scholarly and material ways, and this NCTE decision disperses us as a professional and intellectual community. As a former College English editor who valued NCTE’s role in democratizing the field, I’m deeply sorry to see its loss of commitment, especially at a time when higher ed needs to stand against demagoguery and for the rights and interests of writing and rhetoric scholars and teachers.
