I've attended CCCC for many years, as a participant and presenter. The journals have been part of my career-long growth in Composition Studies. I also was part of leading TYCA, as Northeast Chair, to become an important part of the college conference. I join colleagues across the states in beginning a new chapter and forming an independent organization.

Writing studies is more important than ever in this disruptive era of generative AI. We need a clear and central organization where people come together to explore and define best practices. Teachers and administrators at the high school, college, and graduate levels are looking for advice that has been tested and affirmed by knowledgable peers. This organizational chaos is disrupting the real work we should be doing, and making it harder to share practices and findings across contexts.

Among other reasons, given the suddenness of their decision to de-charter CCCC and the lack of transparency in their explanations for why, I cannot in good faith trust NCTE or anyone associated with them again.

It always felt wrong that the central organization of our field was called a conference. CCCC clearly grew beyond that and doesn't need NCTE. NCTE doesn't seem to want it either or know how to support it. Time for RCWS to go its own way.

We must regroup into an organization that both legitimizes our work in the eyes of the academy (and even better if that also includes the eyes of the public) and provides structural support for all the people in our field.

As a past Chair of the CCCC Committee on Computers in Composition and Communication (7Cs) and long-time digital rhetoric and publishing scholar, I stopped my membership with NCTE in 2012 when I saw repeated failures on NCTE’s part to support and preserve the disciplinary work of CCCC. While I’m sorry it came to an abrupt dechartering of CCCC, the severance from NCTE will proceed fruitful. The field of writing studies has ALWAYS been its own best support; power on!

My entire time in education—both as student and faculty—was devoted to the teaching and learning of writing and reading. My CCCC membership was vital to my own learning and to passing that learning and experience on to my students. Losing CCCC would be a disaster for both teachers and students.

College composition teachers benefit from professional development, spaces for dissemination, and conversations with peers. If NCTE is not willing to host us, let's build something new.

As I end my career, CCCC and its conference were my lifeline for professional development. I'm heartbroken that other young faculty at smaller institutions will lose the opportunity to meet with some of the best scholars in the field and learn to be better writing instructors and scholars the way I was able to do over the last 32 years. The annual conference and the journal provided far better training than I got as a student for the work I'm so passionate about doing.

We in the writing studies community have an opportunity here to make our own house. While that doesn't make NCTE's move any more comprehensible, I am glad we here all have the chance to work at a place for what we do, together.

I have paid to be a member of NCTE because of the setup as such, but I only benefited from CCCC. I found CCCC to be one of the most welcoming, resourceful, and transformative community of discourse and practice. I am shocked and incredulous that anyone can do such a thing in a country like the United States in the 21st century. I will NOT engage in any way shape or form with NCTE unless the saboteurs apologize for the cynical, apparently prejudicial, authoritarian act and correct course.

I'm a grad student in rhetoric and composition at Auburn University. I was excited at the prospect of going to CCCC's for the first time this year, excited to be immersed in the field I'm just getting started in. I'm optimistic to see where this community continues to grow.

I've been a member for 39 years. It's been the anchor of my professional life and a source of great friendships. The next organization will be even beetter!
