In the Avelino area of Las Flores there is a posting by Bemus in the park right now that states they spray Roundup, among other herbicides that warrant more study of harmful effects, such as Speedzone and CheetahPro, a glufosinate that has been shown to cause serious neurological disruptions in humans. The Bemus post says they may spray all of these monthly in our neighborhood. The notice also states that Bemus will post signs when they spray an area, and while residents have seen them spraying, no residents have ever seen signs.
Glyphosate-based herbicides are listed as “probable” carcinogens and there is strong evidence that they alter DNA. It is currently and unfortunately not banned  in CA. Capo Unified recently placed a pause on spraying all pesticides and herbicides for 60 days across schools in response to parent concern. Ladera Ranch paused spraying for 60 days due to the same reason. We must follow their lead. 

It is hard to believe that living in one of the most expensive areas in the nation, South Orange County, can put our children at risk of cancer. It is even harder to believe that with all the research available to us today, we still allow our communities to implement these hazardous practices. Why are we placing neighborhood appearance over the health of ourselves, our pets, and our children? It is time to stop this now. 
We call to move to manual or at the very least organic landscaping. We do not want to wait to become national news like Irvine or Ladera Ranch, the latter of whom has recently had home values decrease and potential buyers pulling out of escrow left and right. To move away from these harmful herbicides is a move into a healthier future. It will say a lot about how Avilino values its citizens, especially our children, more than anything else. I think I speak for many members of our community when I say that we want Las Flores and all neighborhoods within to not only pause but BAN spraying carcinogens now and protect our children.
