Let's Keep Hamilton Public Library's Children's Section Focused on Books, Play & Connection

Our public libraries are special places where children can explore their imaginations, discover a love of reading, and connect with their families and community. We believe the children's section of Hamilton Public Library should continue to prioritize these experiences over tablet style gamified technology.

While technology has its place, we are concerned that interactive tablet style technology with digital game features introduce unnecessary and distracting screen time into a space where families come to enjoy a break from it. For many parents, managing screen time is already a daily challenge, and having to navigate it in another public space can add stress rather than make library visits more enjoyable.

We would love to see the children's section remain a welcoming environment that encourages hands-on play, books, creativity, exploration, and meaningful interaction between children and caregivers.

We are asking Hamilton Public Library to remove and/ or reconsider the use of  tablet-style gamified technology in children's spaces and to prioritize engaging, screen-free alternatives that support children's curiosity, development, and enjoyment of the library.

Let's keep our libraries places where children can unplug, explore, and discover the joy of learning beyond a screen.

Petition request: Remove and/or reconsider placement of tablet-style gamified technology in children's library spaces and continue to prioritize screen-free alternatives.

Keep our libraries sacred! Learning how to use and navigate the library as a child opened up my world within my own neighbourhood. The shared ritual and tactile memory of finding a book is a treasured experience that does not deserve to be overshadowed by some bubble popping game! Tech is a valuable tool that children have a right to discover, but gamified tech traps kids in a cycle of dopamine driven stimulation loops. There is no place for tablet-style gamified technology within the HPL!
