We call on Network Rail and Oxford City Council to rename Oxford Station’s proposed Platform 5 as Platform 9¾ and explore a Harry Potter-themed platform experience.

Oxford is already known around the world for its historic architecture, literary heritage, and connections to the Harry Potter films. From Christ Church to the Bodleian Library, the city draws visitors who come looking for the kind of atmosphere that has made Oxford so special for generations.

Right now, Platform 5 remains undelivered. That delay gives Oxford a rare chance to turn an ordinary infrastructure project into something that could become a memorable part of the city itself. A themed platform would be a welcoming gateway, something people remember, photograph, and talk about long after they leave.

This is about more than a name. A Platform 9¾ experience could strengthen Oxford Station as a destination, help local businesses, and encourage more visitors to stay overnight instead of passing through in a single day. It could also give younger visitors and lifelong fans a reason to connect with Oxford’s literary and film heritage in a way that feels fun and meaningful.

We believe Oxford has the chance to do something distinctive here. Renaming Platform 5 as Platform 9¾ would celebrate the city’s existing magic and create a new attraction that matches Oxford’s reputation.
