A lot of us in the sailing community are sailing to cut down on the rat race and costs of the land life, and to experience the world on a tight budget. Our house is our boat. Starlink HAD made it affordable to have great internet connectivity to reach family members, make phone calls, and even enjoy some wifi streaming. Unfortunately, their new policy will make reliable world wide internet unaffordable for thousands, and plummet us back to the dark ages.

The policy assumes a traveler who goes home. I have been cruising continuously for ten years without returning to the United States. My pattern is roughly two weeks in a country, then on to the next. Hopping from the BVI to St. Martin to Antigua resets nothing — the clock runs on time outside your home country, not time in any one place. Localizing doesn’t help either; you’re foreign again within a fortnight. So for full-time cruisers this isn’t a usage restriction. It’s a cutoff. WHY IT’S MORE
