Hallowed ground. It is the lost piece of NYC I miss the most after living here almost 50 years.

So much musical history here, too many shows to list, from all genres of much. We saw the Police in their NYC debut, we saw John Hartford, Nils Lofgren, Lou Reed, the Floating Men. We saw Donovan, Sun Ra, Bill Monroe & His Country Gentlemen, Porcupine Tree, Trey Gunn . . . on and on, year after year, decade after decade. For me, it was part of the NYU campus when I was there in the 70s, part of my musical education. The bottom line is that the spot is history - honor it, please.

In its time The Bottom Line helped to transform and revitalize a dying, unsafe neighborhood. Restaurants came in, music fans came calling. Other mom and pop businesses benefited as did all of us. The neighborhood and surrounding areas of Manhattan owe a debt of gratitude to The Bottom Line and to Allan Pepper and Stanley Snadowsky.

The Bottom Line was a treasured venue that symbolized building community through a shared love of music. It deserves to be recognized as a Greenwich Village historic landmark.

Patti Smith walked on the tables there, showing off her diamond bracelet from Clive Davis; they had MIGHTY CLOUDS OF JOY, BRIAN AUGER and THE RASPBERRIES, all in one month in 1974.
