We support preserving Easton’s natural beauty and open space. We do NOT support building an unnecessary public hiking trail through a small residential neighborhood.

The town of Easton is considering transferring a 50% ownership interest in approximately 16 acres of town owned land near Sierra Lane to Aspetuck Land Trust. Residents were only informed in late Summer that the proposed arrangement could result in a public hiking trail with access through Sierra Lane.

We respectfully oppose the proposed trail and ask the Town of Easton not to move forward with its construction.

Why are we opposed?

1.      Easton already offers extensive hiking opportunities.

Our town is fortunate to have numerous established hiking trails, nature preserves, and protected open spaces. Before introducing another trail into a small residential neighborhood, town officials should demonstrate why it is necessary and what meaningful benefit it would provide.

 2.     Sierra Lane is not an appropriate location for public recreational access.

Sierra Lane is a small, quiet cul-de-sac with only four homes and several young children. Delaware Road is narrow, winding, and already experiences traffic concerns. A public trail could bring additional vehicles, parking problems, and pedestrian safety risks to an area not designed to accommodate recreational visitors.

 3.    The potential impact outweighs the apparent benefit.

Residents understand the proposed trail would offer relatively short hiking experience. We question whether that benefit justifies the potential long-term consequence for neighborhood safety, privacy, wildlife, and the peaceful residential character of the area.

 4.    Residents deserve a voice in decisions affecting their neighborhood.

Families living closest to the proposed trail were not adequately consulted before the proposal advanced. Decisions of this nature should involve meaningful public discussion, transparence, and consideration of those most directly affected.

 5.    Preserving land does not require constructing a hiking trail.

We strongly support protecting Easton’s natural resources. However, conservation and recreational development are two separate decisions. Land can remain protected and environmentally valuable without being converted into another public hiking destination.

We ask the Town of Easton and its elected officials to:

Reject the proposed public hiking trail involving Sierra Lane. Reconsider the proposed property ownership agreement until its implications for public access are fully understood. Preserve the land in its natural state without introducing unnecessary recreational development. Meaningfully engage affected residents before making any final decisions.

Eason already has wonderful places to hike. Not every protected property needs to become a public trail.

Please sign this petition to help protect Sierra Lane, Delaware Road and the rural character of our neighborhood.

Thank you!

PLEASE DO NOT GIVE ANY DONATIONS IF ASKED

This is a very short lane surrounded with families with small children and elderly people. We don’t need or want strangers hanging around or gathering in this small area. I consider this area to be a very safe area and would like to keep it that way. Really, please listen to the families that your decision will have the most detrimental effect on. Thank you so much for genuinely thinking about how this will affect the neighborhood and the community. Thank you. Janet S Melfi

We literally moved from Delaware Rd because of the speeding traffic on that road which was so unsafe for our children to even take a walk on. This will only make matters worse for the families living on Delaware or the surrounding streets.

Even in its proposal, they state it will see limited use and be a very short 'trail'. So why do it in the first place? Parking is limited on a narrow street. The Fire Chief is against it. Delaware is a narrow and dangerous road with sharp tunrs and hills. The last thing it needs is more traffic. Extensive Hoyden Hill and Smith Richardson hiking trails are a 3 wood distance away with lots of parking and are open to Easton residents. The land in question is required to remain preserved anyway.

There is not enough room for parking and people already fly down Delaware Road so fast. It’s dangerous going up over the hills where you can’t see and the roads are too narrow.

We live off of Delaware but our property abutts up to Sierra and we already get so many trespassers! It’s terrible!

As a fellow community member, I strongly oppose the proposed hiking trail entrance at the end of this small, residential cul-de-sac. This quiet street is home to families with young children who deserve to feel safe playing, riding bikes, and enjoying their neighborhood. Introducing public trail access in such a small residential area raises legitimate concerns about increased vehicle and foot traffic, parking, pedestrian safety, and the overall impact on the families who live there.

This is unnecessary. Delaware is already a risky dangerous road. Unsafe for walking or kids to be on bikes. The road is a cut thru to avoid CT15 or golfers avoiding the traffic. Funding would be better spent on speed measures and road safety on Delaware. Walking trails are great, but the town should prioritize safety of the road.

This will destroy a peaceful tiny cul-de-sac
