Hello neighbors!
My name is Simon Hernandez, and my wife, our kids, and I have lived at 1617 Preston Road since 2021. Until recently, we had outdoor furniture in the gravel garden area outside our home. Many neighbors had similar setups, and we understood this to be an accepted use of these spaces.
As you likely know, recent enforcement has required us to remove that furniture. These small seating areas gave us a place to spend time outside, talk with neighbors, and enjoy our community.
On Wednesday, October 21, the Parkfairfax Board of Directors will consider whether to grant a hearing on one neighbor’s request concerning outdoor furniture in a common element extended garden. That request concerns only our neighbor’s situation. It is not a community-wide vote on outdoor seating.
This petition supports our neighbor’s request for a hearing and shows the Board that residents throughout Parkfairfax care about these spaces. We want the Board to consider a community-wide policy allowing reasonable, well-maintained outdoor furniture in gravel garden areas.
We support clear standards that keep walkways open, protect landscaping, preserve maintenance access, and respect neighboring homes. We are asking the Board to work with residents so we can enjoy these spaces while keeping Parkfairfax attractive and accessible.
Please sign, and if you are comfortable then include your name and Parkfairfax address to show your support. If you are uncomfortable with that then please still sign without that info! The undersigned affirm they are an owner or resident in Parkfairfax and support the Board making the following changes to Administrative Resolution #2:
- Outdoor furniture is permitted on patios, common element extended gardens, and within 10 feet of a unit's wall
- Furniture materials should be expressly manufactured to be utilized outdoors (ie be designed to withstand sun, rain, humidity, and temperature changes while maintaining durability and appearance) and may include, but are not strictly limited to: wood, rattan, synthetic wicker, waterproof upholstery, metal, and high-density polyethylene
- Colors should be neutral or align with other approved Parkfairfax colors like the brick and door colors
- In order to prevent flooding, furniture must be placed on permeable materials such as dirt, mulch, grass, wood chips, or small gravel
Thank you!
Spending time outside with neighbors is one of the best things about living in Parkfairfax! Small seating areas outside our homes are necessary for this. I live at 1625 Preston Rd.
