PETITION: Implement a Wildcard Playoff Tiebreaker for Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) Middle School (MS) Sports
To: VBCPS Middle School Student Activity Coordinators, League Commissioners, and VBCPS School Board Members
Initiated By: Concerned Parents, Coaches, Student-Athletes, and Community Members
Goal / Purpose
To establish a mandatory Wildcard Game policy across all VBCPS MS sports leagues when two or more teams are tied for the final playoff spot at the end of the regular season, replacing the current practice of drawing names out of a hat.
The Proposed Solution
We propose that the VBCPS MS league athletic policy be updated to include the following Wildcard Playoff Rule:
Wildcard Game Trigger: If, at the end of the regular season, two or more teams are tied for the final remaining playoff spot (where the winner advances to the postseason and the loser is eliminated), the tie must be broken via a single-elimination Wildcard Game.
Scheduling & Format: The Wildcard Game will take place prior to the start of the official playoff round, hosted at a neutral site or the home field of the team winning the initial head-to-head tiebreaker.
Outcome: The winner of the Wildcard Game earns the final playoff seed and advances to the postseason tournament.
Why This Change Matters
Teaches Perseverance and Merit: Outcome-determining games teach middle schoolers that success is earned on the field, not determined in an administrator's office.
Increases Excitement & Engagement: A high-stakes wildcard game creates an energetic, championship-style atmosphere for athletes, parents, and the school community.
Ensures Fair Play: Gives teams that improved dramatically over the course of the season a fair, head-to-head opportunity to prove they belong in the postseason.

The decision to draw a name out of a hat for the tiebreaker for a playoff game seems under thought at best. As an avid soccer spectator at all levels, I have not seen a tiebreaker settled in this way. The methodical way is primarily goal differential at every level. Kids invest an abundance of time at practice and games, along with training on their own and deserve to know that the district puts effort into their efforts and sport.
Our school worked incredibly hard this season, especially after going two years without winning a single game. These players fought hard and truly earned the opportunity to compete in the playoffs. To have their hard work dismissed by a name drawn from a cup is absolutely disappointing. At the very least, these teams deserved the opportunity to settle the fourth-seed playoff position on the field. I had hoped the decision would be reconsidered, but I sincerely hope this petition brings change.
my little brother worked all season and summer training for school and i’d hate to see him go out just in luck of the draw out a hat
The pulling a name from a hat option is the absolute worst way to be eliminated. It’s not right.
Soccer game draw out of the hat ? Seriously
Soccer in general has a point system on place for a reason. In the event that a game is still tied at the conclusion of regulation play, during the regular season its a tie. Both teams are awarded 1 point and move on to the next game. PKs are used to settle post season games because they CANNOT end in a tie. This will eliminate the pulling a name from a cup or hat or whatever has been used to determine who gets to play. I wish I had more characters to keep going..
It’s important to have a fair, consistent and defendable system for the playoffs. I understand it’s only middle school, but the kids deserve every effort we can make.
