We have a daughter who has Down Syndrome and Autism. She attended Hartvigsen from age 8 -22. We live in the Olympus HS boundary and have 3 kids who have attended Oly and 1 who will be at Oly Jr in the fall and has ADHD and has a 504 plan. It is absolutely essential to restore and actually increase funding for special education. Why punish the kids who so desperately need these critical services for some error in paperwork? The SPED teachers and aides are already busy and stressed enough.

Failure to do so will erode student/school outcomes and performance, further decrease confidence in public education, and threaten Utah’s ability to be a top performing state economically. Refrain from pushing the “easy button” by cutting resources not funded due to a mistake. Include experienced educators in the decision. Engage others to work the problem and find a solution.

FAPE includes addressing disability-related safety needs. If Granite cuts paraprofessionals because of this budget mistake, students will lose critical support. Fewer paras means less supervision, less help, and less time for teachers to focus on instruction. Students cannot learn in an unsafe environment=denying our students FAPE.

I am signing this petition as a taxpayer, neighbor, and community member. There are children in my neighborhood who are directly impacted by these programs, and I have seen the difference they make for students and families. Special education services are not extras. They are essential supports that help children learn, grow, and reach their potential. I believe there has to be a better solution than balancing budgets on the backs of our most vulnerable students.
