Ensure a Fair TCSPCA Director Search
We, the undersigned, have grave concerns about the selection of a new Director for the Tompkins County SPCA and would like the Board of Directors to consider implementing the following changes:
- A Search Committee that includes seasoned volunteers and staff, as well as individuals who run other non-profit rescues.
- A new director with animal shelter experience and/or proven compassion for animals
- A new director who is routinely available to staff and volunteers and is receptive to new ideas and quick to respond to issues.
- A new director with a clear vision for restoring the community's trust in the facility
- A Board of Directors that includes seasoned volunteers, members that run other non-profit rescues, and members with a proven interest in shelter animal well-being.
- In the long run, we recommend that the Board itself be comprised of such identified individuals.

It is imperative that this search be as transparent as possible to the community. Too long have the shelter operations been held close to the vest. I hope the board is willing to engage a wide range of input from staff/volunteers and community members.
The TCSPCA needs a fresh younger outlook on shelter management. A person who loves all animals and not just “little dogs”. Also a person who will do anything they can to keep an adoptable animal from being euthanized. Just because a cat isn’t friendly or a dog is a bit aggressive doesn’t mean said animal needs to be killed. Those animals need to be worked with.
This is very important
The animals cannot speak out for themselves. We have to be their voices!
Tompkins County deserves a director of our SPCA who takes the job seriously, who shows up for work, who loves animals, and is fair to hard-working staff and volunteers.
My wife says a fair director search is in order, which sounds right to me!

I have been involved in sheltering/rescue for nearly 30 years in volunteer and board/administrative capacities as well as learning "no kill" from Nathan Winograd when he was the executive director for and brought the TCSPCA into the "no kill" sheltering era. When searching for the right fit in an ED it is a MUST to have the right search committee - not just the chosen puppets.
