Sign the petition demanding that the Town of Hempstead and Nassau County hold their appointed South Nassau Water Authority commissioners accountable for efficiently, effectively, and expeditiously acquiring Liberty Water before its proposed 37% rate increase takes effect.

For the past 4½ years, the Town and County’s commissioners failed to complete the public acquisition of Liberty Water. Now, after all this time, SNWA is submitting a second purchase offer, Town and County officials must press their own appointments to stop this delay.  If Liberty fails to timely respond to this second offer, Liberty should face appropriate consequences for violating the strict negotiation timeline established in Liberty's Joint Proposal. That agreement required good-faith negotiations with SNWA and was a key condition that allowed Liberty to acquire New York American Water in the first place. It is the commissioners appointed by the Town and County who can and must request that the New York Public Service Commission step in and force Liberty to negotiate in good faith or face sanctions and any further rate increase be rejected due to Liberty’s violation of the Joint Proposal.

We, the undersigned, urge the Town and County to vigorously oppose Liberty's proposed rate increases and ensure SNWA completes the public takeover before any new rates take effect. We deserve affordable, publicly accountable water service, not unnecessary delays that result in higher water bills.

The cost with Liberty just keeps going up & now they are planning rate hikes. We need our water to be a public utility as it is for much of Long Island.

It's way past time for the South Nassau Water Authority to stop dragging it's feet, and get on with providing us public water.

We are paying much higher rates than we would, if the Town of Hempstead and Nassau County took over. We need relief from high water rates.

Liberty Water should be municipalized because residents are paying private-utility rates inflated by heavy property-tax costs while receiving no meaningful local control over pricing, infrastructure investment, or service quality. Public ownership would remove the profit motive, reduce duplicated overhead and tax burdens, improve transparency, and allow ratepayer money to be reinvested directly into water quality, pipe replacement, reliability, and long-term affordability.

It is unconscionable that the Town of Hempstead provides water for some of the town residents while allowing a for-profit corporation to provide this natural resource for other portions of the town. The rates are astronomical and puts one town resident at a disadvantage for another.
