Chinese calligraphy is a meaningful way to stay in touch with my cultural roots while learning a skill to enrich my daily life. Mr Chew has been a great teacher in sharing his expertise and wisdom in calligraphy. I wish to continue to learn from him at NTU Confuscious Institute. Please continue to offer the class. Thank you.

May NTU be able to lend its support in continuous learning and play its crucial role in advocating Chinese cultural appreciation (through its branding of Confucius Institute), and allow Chinese Calligraphy lessons to be continued. Thank you.

It’s an important cultural function that the Institute is providing through the calligraphy class. These classes impart rich cultural tradition and knowledge that is aligned with Confucian philosophy and tradition. These classes have also created a strong community which nurtures strong links to the institution.

The class you started since 10 years back is already building a real community of learners who show up week after week not because they have to but because the genuinely love to. After seeing the work from my friend, I am tempted to sign up for the class!! It seems a real pity to stop it now. We hope you can find a way to continue. Thank you.

I fully support this appeal as I have seen firsthand how my friend Chia Woon Khien has grown in your class. Calligraphy is a quiet but precious way to promote the Chinese language and culture.

I had been taking this Chinese Calligraphy class taught by Mr Chee(周和顺老师)for about 3 years. Mr Chew knowledge and writing in Chinese Calligraphy had greatly up lifted many students my skill in this art including myself. This course provided another benchmark in Singapore art scene. NTU could leverage this good work and contribute to the speaking mandarin campaign by continue offering this class.
Initially, we came because of the brush strokes. Somewhere somehow between the unfurling of paper and after the ink dries, we bonded. Now we come for the camaraderie that has taken us on trips thousands of miles to where Chinese calligraphy calls home, and to calligraphy activities throughout the year on this island we call home. We've bought reams of paper and crates of ink together. We've gifted each other enough brushes to never needing to buy one. All this because we signed up for a class.

As one of the Six Arts—central to Confucian holistic education, a practice of patience and moral focus. We respect the institute’s new research shift. May we propose structured learning goals: final works and basic research into historical styles and assimilation into Southeast Asian culture, to give our practice academic grounding while preserving its artistic essence. We hope this shows our willingness to adapt and chance to grow alongside the institute. Grateful for your reconsideration.

This Calligraphy class has been a highlight of my week for the last 2 years, with Lao Shi’s patience in teaching us and his guidance forming an integral part of my learning, improvement, and appreciation of the craft. I’ve really gotten to appreciate the art of calligraphy through this class, alongside a community of students who are incredibly friendly and likeminded. Having this class be removed would leave an impressionable gap in my pursuit of calligraphy which is not easily replaced.

Coming to Lao Shi’s class is like seeing light at the end of a tunnel. So much to learn from him!
Chinese calligraphy is a vital means of preserving our Chinese heritage. Reading & writing deepen cultural understanding, while calligraphy cultivates inner calm & character. The programme advances the CI’s language & cultural mission, & its sustained student participation proves its value. As the Institute becomes a research institution, ending this established programme would be regrettable. We hope it will continue growing & inspire more students to learn & carry forward Chinese culture.

Learning chinese calligraphy is really good for mind and body.
“The class has been very grounding and enlightening for me. The learning experience here has far surpassed the other calligraphy classes I have attended. One of the main reason is how conducive the classroom set up is for the lesson. I truly hope we can continue to practise calligraphy here.”
