Help Honor Nearly 100 Years of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®️ in Colorado
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®️ has been serving communities across Colorado for nearly a century. As we approach this historic milestone, Alpha Kappa Alpha members from across the state are working together to establish a commemorative Colorado license plate that celebrates our legacy of service, leadership, scholarship, and sisterhood. To make that vision a reality, we need the support of Colorado residents.
State requirements call for 3,500 signatures from licensed and registered Colorado residents before a new specialty license plate can be considered for approval.
Who We Are and Our Colorado Story
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®️ was founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University, becoming the first Greek-letter organization established by and for African American college-educated women.
Colorado's AKA story began in 1928 with the chartering of Alpha Kappa Chapter. What started with one chapter has grown into a statewide network of six chapters whose members have spent decades investing in communities through scholarships, mentoring programs, health initiatives, voter engagement efforts, economic empowerment activities, and countless hours of volunteer service. Alpha Kappa Alpha women have helped open doors, created opportunities, and strengthened communities across Colorado. This specialty license plate is an opportunity to recognize that history and ensure it is remembered for generations to come.
How You Can Help
We're asking Colorado residents age 18 or older with a Colorado address to sign our petition in support of the commemorative license plate. Out-of-state addresses and P.O. Boxes are not acceptable.
You are NOT obligated to purchase a license plate.
We are NOT requesting donations.
Your information will be used ONLY to satisfy the petition requirements established by the Colorado Department of Revenue.
You do NOT have to be a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®️to sign.
One signature, when combined collectively with many others, helps tell a much bigger story. One of the history of service, leadership, and community impact that has spanned generations. We encourage you to share this effort with your family, friends, colleagues, neighbors, and fellow Colorado residents. Every signature helps us preserve and celebrate an important chapter of Colorado history.
Why This Effort Matters
This isn't simply about a license plate. It's about honoring the women of AKA who helped build a legacy of service in Colorado. It's about recognizing the contributions of Black women whose leadership has impacted education, neighborhoods, businesses, nonprofits, and communities throughout our state. And it's about preserving an important piece of Colorado history that deserves celebration. The plate will serve as a visible reminder of the strength of sisterhood and what can happen when women come together with a shared commitment to serve and uplift others.
What's Next
Once the required signatures are collected and approved, the commemorative Alpha Kappa Alpha license plate can move through the state's approval process and become available through Colorado DMV offices, just like other specialty license plates. Our goal is to have this plate available as we celebrate 100 years of Alpha Kappa Alpha's presence in Colorado.

As a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., I know first hand the pride and recognition that comes with having commemorative plates! Not only is it a uniquely communal experience to feel deeply connected to another driver on the highway when I see her Delta plates, but my own customized DST plates are a conversation starter with non-D9 that allows me to grow the awareness about my chapter and the great work we do in the broader Co. community! Good luck to the Co. AKA’s in their efforts!
My Sorority and the Chapters in Colorado deserve to be acknowledged and represented. I have been involved in the sorority for almost 25 years and enjoy being a part of the Sisterhood!
I am signing the petition because the Alpha Kappa Alpha Colorado special license plate will provide an opportunity to celebrate the sorority’s legacy of service, scholarship, and community impact. Supporting this initiative allows members and supporters to proudly recognize the organization’s contributions while creating greater visibility for its continued commitment to uplifting communities.
As a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, this license plate would represent far more than an organization—it would honor a legacy of service, scholarship, sisterhood, and leadership that has positively impacted communities for nearly a century. Every day, members across Colorado volunteer, mentor, advocate, and work to improve the lives of others. A dedicated license plate would recognize those contributions while celebrating the rich history and lasting impact of Alpha Ka
Because I am a member of the Sorority and would love to see us having a license plate for our Sorority

Recognizing the work of dedicated, committed women is important. The women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. serve as role models for young women navigating not only educational spaces but also life in general. "People need role models. My fiancée is an AKA woman, AKA women work incredibly hard and are amazing role models, especially for their community. AKA in CO deserve this commemorative plaque not just for well-deserved recognition and appreciation, but to show people that there are amazing, dedicated leaders that are their respected neighbors on the road beside them.
