The University of Nevada, Reno is facing a 6.9% budget reduction, significantly impacting the College of Education. The Curricular Review Proposal calls for the elimination of the Master's Program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). This would mean that no teacher education program would remain to address the needs of English language learners (ELLs) in Northern Nevada. With Washoe County only graduating 16% of it ELLs we believe this proposed closure puts Nevada's population and its economy in jeopardy. Furthermore, we believe all Nevadans should have equal access to a quality education. We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the MA TESOL program at UNR be preserved.
