WE ACTUALLY DID IT AND THE DEPARTMENT IS OFFICIALLY SAVED!! THE UNIVERSITY HAS AGREED TO HONOR ALL STUDENT DEGREES AND KEEP THE PROGRAM RUNNING UNTIL WE ALL GRADUATE!! I AM ABSOLUTELY OVERJOYED THAT WE STUCK TOGETHER TO PROTECT OUR FUTURE AT OUDESIGN!!
I demand that the University of Otago honours its commitment to design students and support their right to complete the design for Technology major in its entirety. This would involve maintaining the department and offering all currently available design papers until the completion of present student degrees.
This course is unique to NZ, as the only human centred design course in the country. It fulfils a gap otherwise missing from NZ design education.

Ive done a paper with the department and loved it, they are all such wonderful lecturers and are offering something different here as far as design education goes around New Zealand, definitely an asset to the university!

This is the only course in the country that teaches design thinking and methodology like this, why would the University want to loose such a valuable resource? The students and staff of the design programme deserve so much better. Shame on you Otago, I certainly won't study with you again if you go through with the proposed closure.

These students have made the decision to spend their time and money to complete this degree at the University of Otago and to have the powers that be cut it from under them is disgraceful. They showed commitment to Otago, now the University needs to show some commitment to their students.

It is a very shortsighted move by the university to close down design studies when the town that they are based in is poised to become a hotbed of technological innovation in the near future. We are going to need designers, so closing down the department will be just as good as shooting themselves in the foot.

When students embark on a degree, there's an expectation that that same degree will exist long enough for them to finish it - for those this affects, it's devastating. If my course were being removed and altered like this I would be reacting this same way.

I'm actually planning on studying Design next year and that's one of the reasons why I'm going to Otago as opposed to staying in Wellington
