Save the Smithsonian’s Haupt Garden!

If you’ve entered the Smithsonian Institution from Independence Ave., you’ve probably enjoyed the Enid Haupt Garden. The Haupt Garden is a small jewel in the National Mall and a real oasis for both tourists and residents alike.

An important component of the Smithsonian Institution’s proposed "South Mall Campus Master Plan" is to completely demolish the Enid Haupt Garden; the existing entrance pavilions to the National Museum of African Art, the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, and the S. Dillon Ripley International Center; and the Renwick Gates and Walls at the south edge of the Haupt Garden.

For more details, please see the recent op-ed in the Washington Post.

As a supporter of the Smithsonian Institution, I urge the Institution’s Secretary to re-consider the South Mall Campus Plan so that the Haupt Garden and surrounding architectural and landscape features are retained.

Respectfully, the undersigned

The Enid Haupt Garden is one of the most beautiful spaces in all of Washington. The new plan does not fit aesthetically with the Victorian Castle. I understand the need to fix the leaking roof. I most emphatically do not agree with replacing the garden.

These gardens provide natural beauty and an oasis for peace in an ever increasing urban jungle of dense concrete. Plans to connect the Mall to SW do not require demolition of the gardens. In fact, they should expand the gardens to Banneker Park.

I'm horrified that the Smithsonian could even consider getting rid of this treasure. It's an oasis of beauty and calm in a busy, hot, sticky city -- after 26 years of living here, it's still one of my very favorite spots. Very ill-considered, Smithsonian!

The existing garden is beautiful, peaceful, and fits very well with the historical buildings around it. The proposed replacement is cold, soulless, and industrial as well as jarring against the historical buildings. Why would anyone seek it out?

The Enid Haupt Garden is a JEWEL on the Mall -- a beautiful place for visitors, local or from abroad, and a habitat for birds and critters! Please keep the beauty of flowers, trees and welcoming benches for rest and reflection in the heart of Washington.

The beautiful Haupt Garden was a gift that was certainly intended to be in perpetuity. The idea of destroying is shocking ingratitude and should certainly make potential donors hesitant if they think their gift might be destroyed in a few years.

Do not damage this treasure.

BIG's concept is a transgression against the District and its citizens. The Haupt Garden is a character defining feature of the Mall and BIG's puerile mephitic proposal must be stopped!
