Sustainable Urban Development is a non-profit organization looking to better the West Philadelphia area. On May 12, 2011 the city of Philadelphia sent us a letter telling us that they are trying to authorize the of the acquisition of the land that the 59th Street Community Garden is on. We have started this petition in order to save our garden. This garden is very beneficial to West Philadelphia and the people that reside in it. Hunger is a huge issue in Philadelphia and we are working to combat it. Hunger can look like obesity because many people do not have access to affordable and fresh fruits and vegetables for their family. With our community garden, people can not only acquire fresh food but they can also be educated on gardening and ways to eat healthier. Please support our cause by signing this petition to keep our garden. Feel free to elaborate on your decision to sign this petition so that the government of Philadelphia can see the need to save the 59th Street Garden.

Founder of Sustainable Urban Development, Laura Thornton said, "It's a tough situation. I commend the city for wanting to develop and put some energy into Haddington. But it is definitely frustrating after all this work we (the community and members of Sustainable Urban Development) have put into the 59th Street Community Garden. Hopefully at Tuesday's meeting we can find out more about the future of the garden. Thanks you all for the support!
