UWE management are withdrawing applications for prospective students to the Film Department as a back door measure to shut it down bringing an end to the brilliant work that it does. This move is the latest step in UWE's sustained attacks on Arts and Humanities at the University.

We call on UWE management to allow all applicants to continue with their application process as normal and to guarantee the long term survival of the Film Department at UWE.

As a former student at UWE I was lucky enough as a Cultural and Media Studies student to learn about Latin American Cinema and its many political messages, it was inspiring, informative and THE best way to learn about the history of a struggling region, its politics and diaspora - it beats any history class hands down.

From the perspective of someone who works in a modern art museum, and who observes daily the pillar importance of film in the contemporary art world but also as a means of education into modern culture and history, it is incomprehensible to me that such a decision is being made.

I spent my Erasmus year at UWE in 2005/2006 where I studied Film Studies. It was here that I discovered my love for the subject and decided to do a PhD (which I successfully completed last year). I loved the departmennt and the great teaching atmosphere. I owe so much to this department!

I'm a former student, and former instructor at UWE. This kind of move is crazy. There's no point in teaching people about sales and marketing if there's nothing being made to sell or market. This is short-termism at its worst.

I have everything to thank this course for. I would not be where I am without the insight and ability given to me by the incredible lecturers and practical instructors. Working as an assistant director on coronation street is a dream and this course helped me achieve it.

It's a brilliant subject that has taught me a lot. I'd hate for that opportunity to be taken away for future students. We're also one of the only Uni's to do Screenwriting.

Typical! and getting rid of A level Film as well. I had a great experinece at UWE Cultural and Media degree, and have been teaching Film and Media for 18 years.
