Final supporters
Rutherford House School is situated on the busy A24 between Tooting Bec and Balham. This stretch of road is becoming increasingly dangerous and there have been several accidents in the past year. The school is next door to Tesco Express which is a very busy junction in the mornings and after school.
The signatories below feel that the students would be made safer by the addition of signs and flashing lights indicating that they are driving outside a school and believe a lollipop lady/man is needed to help students arrive at school safely.

I just spent the morning watching the traffic pile up near Tesco and it really hits home how chaotic those few minutes before the bell are. I have been drafting emails to the local council office all night and although I have not heard anything back yet I know they have to acknowledge us if we keep pushing on this.

I really thought this might just be a small thing I wrote in a frustrated blur one evening but people are actually seeing this and it all feels so real now. Watching the momentum build is honestly making me dizzy (in a good way) because I know how terrifying that junction is during the morning rush. We are finally getting somewhere and I just need a second to process how many of you decided this mattered enough to stop and take action.

Live across the road and daughter goes to RHS there are no road signs that the school is there. People use the island to cross either for school or teacups and Argos as both crossings are way too far and a long red lite interval. Cars do drive way too fast.
On a number of occasions I have seen cars racing each other along this stretch of the High Road and it feels dangerous even walking along the pavement with small children. Please make some changes!
I am becoming increasingly concerned with the speed at which cars pull into the Tesco car park right next to the school gate. Please treat this as a matter of urgency.
It is just a matter of time - the entrance to Tescos is unsafe and there have been far too many near misses. With a growing school next door it is crucial that this is made safer as a matter of urgency.
Balham High Road is a straight and wide road and some drivers take this as an opportunity for speeding which adds to the dangers amongst the many already facing parents and children. More "attention schools" and "children crossing" signs as well as flashing lights are definitively needed.
Traffic (including cyclists) go far too fast and the entrance to the Tesco garage is really dangerous.
I think Tesco should take some responsibility for ensuring drivers entering their forecourt are more aware of the fact that a school is right next door. Does anyone know if the Council have got any further with proposed plans to turn this stretch of road into a Boulevard which would mean it is changed into one lane of traffic in each direction rather than two? Not sure why the road needs to go from one lane from Tooting Bec into two lanes for a short stretch and then back into one lane just before Balham station. I'm all for making it one lane all the way!

i have been present at both the aftermaths or the accidents and seen the distress of the adults and children at the school, something needs to be done to make this area safer
