PETITION TO KEEP ROCKFORD POLICE SCANNER OPEN AND FREE
We, the undersigned citizens do hereby request that the City of Rockford and Rockford Police Department continue to keep the police scanner open, transparent, unedited and free.
The Rockford Police Scanner has been open, transparent, unedited and free since it started many years ago. A lot of Rockford residents and Winnebago County residents depend and rely on the scanner for its unedited, open, free and transparent information. The existing unedited, open, free and transparent scanner system helps inform residents as to what is going on in our town at the present time and we want to keep it that way.

The Rockford police department plans on going full encryption on August 1st 2016.
This will not allow any citizen or media outlet to listen to the everyday police scanner traffic.

I have been hearing from so many of you who rely on these scanners to keep your families safe in our neighborhoods. The city continues to ignore our concerns while they prepare to cut off the only real-time information we have left. Please keep talking to your neighbors about why this total blackout of public information is wrong for Rockford.

Reconsider encrypting scanners! Rockford crime is bad. We the citizens of Rockford should have the ability to listen for location stats, suspect info, and any other crime information. The public then may use this information to protect themselves and their families!
If we know what's going on it helps keep us safe and avoid areas where the police are working , So it is better to keep us informed and we are less likely to think that RPD is trying to be sneaky. They already have an encrypted channel for emergencies
I think the heads at the police dept do not want us to know what is really going on. They should Inact a delay and not block us from knowing what is going on in our community!! A delay would address their concerns and still allow us our right to know!
I think it's our right to know what's going on and where. It keeps the public informed so if crime happens in our neighborhood we can help the police catch the subjects. Criminals carry guns, not scanners. Most of them don't even understand what the 10 codes mean.
I think we should be able to listen too the crime as it happens and know when and what is going on especially in cases where I've heard the school where my kids go come into a lock down . But never was informed off it until after school hours

Our tax dollars pay the politicians and police, we deserve to know what's going on, especially for free. The decision about the scanners is up to the people, not the politicians. They work for us, not the other way around. Otherwise, why are we giving them our tax dollars.
