The Omaha city council recently passed an ordinance which places at risk the religious freedom of Omaha's citizen's, religious organizations, and businesses. This ordinance could force businesses run by religious organizations to operate contrary to their professed beliefs for tax purposes, could force Churches to violate the precepts of their faiths, and could force organizations that are not run by a faith, but profess religious principles (i.e. the Boy Scouts, Hobby Lobby, Chick-Fil-A) to do likewise. These are just some of the potential negative consequences of this ordinance. The ordinance itself is not directly hostile to religious freedom; however the vague, general language which it employs leaves the open possibility of frivolous lawsuits and other abuses. This petition asks the Omaha city council to reword their ordinance so that those people who choose to engage in homosexuality or trans-genderism will receive the protection they are due in the secular workplace, and at the same time the rights of religious organizations, businesses run by religious organizations, and businesses professing religious principles will not be infringed.
