Call for international intervention in Zimbabwe
As the crisis in Zimbabwe deepens, we Zimbabwean exiles â living in the Republic of Ireland â we appeal to you, to use your diplomatic influence in the African continent to promote wise counsel in Zimbabwe and avert genocide. The citizens of Zimbabwe are under siege from an illegal regime that is trying to deprive us of our democratic right to choose who rules our precious country. Due to Mugabeâs chaotic and lawless political and economic policies, Zimbabwe has plunged into political, economic and social turmoil. Today, exactly twenty four days after the presidential poll, the people of Zimbabwe do not know the results of the election. The irony of it is that the country seems to be gearing for a run off election. People being asked to endure another electoral process in Zimbabwe without being informed who, at least, won the first round. The silence from ZEC (The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission) is deafening. In recent days a shipment of arms into Zimbabwe was diverted. However, we understand that the illegal government in Zimbabwe is devising a plan to fly the weapons into the country. If this succeeds, we believe the world will witness one of the worst genocides in recent history. Mugabe has tortured and killed before to retain power and today stands ready to do exactly the same. Currently, his regime continues to murder vulnerable people, particularly in rural areas where there is limited media coverage. We implore you to take the following steps to ensure that the people of Zimbabwe are not forgotten. 1.Adopt a deliberate position to actively support, empower and highlight on the international stage, the efforts by SADC member states to pressure Mugabe to accept to the will of the people of Zimbabwe. 2.Use your influence in the Southern African region to stop the weapons being flown through their air spaces. 3.Ensure the Zimbabwean government stands trial before the United Nations Security Council. 4.Support the introduction of a peacekeeping mission in Zimbabwe. 5.Take steps to ensure Mugabeâs regime is isolated from all international fora.
