Food waste is a global problem that makes up 1/3 of global greenhouse gas emissions. USF is uniquely positioned to tackle its own food waste, following the trails blazed by countless other universities in the country and the state of Florida. Composting, biodigesting, and direct food waste reduction efforts are CRITICAL for USF to prioritize sustainability on all campuses!

As long as the initiatives taken are well-thought out, I think this could be a great start in reducing our carbon footprint. I also think certain initiatives could not only benefit sustainability but could also add a monetary incentive. For example, having on-site composting or vermiculture (better product) can be used in say a local community garden tended to by students to grow healthy foods, but could also be rebagged and sold for profit – either the composted material or worms from vermiculture, and will also reduce food waste. It could also be encouraged to use compostable paper products rather than Styrofoam or other non-compostable products (keep in mind this is not always available) or the use of student provided reusable beverages, food containers, or utensils; maybe adding a discount for students doing so.

Food waste is a major issue facing our society in terms of contributing to climate change, economic loss, and the fact that there are hungry people that could be fed! Please work to address this issue.
