Westfield Boro residents, parents of children in WAES and CVHS need to call or write the elected Boro council @ 429 East main Street Westfield PA. 814-367-2632 and explain that the Boro needs to keep the second police vehicle, this is a matter of public and officer safety, when our primary car is out of service for mechanical issues or out of town with an officer for court, investigation or training the second car is needed. This second vehicle can be used by another officer to handle emergency's. Over the past 8 months this second vehicle has been used countless times from assists to the on duty officer, parades, traffic enforcement and handling multiple calls at once. Most importantly is that the department uses our vehicles as a mobile prison cell, this keeps the public, offender and officer safe. In the past when the primary police car is broken down for days to weeks officers are forced to use personal owned vehicles for Police Department use. On dangerous calls officer are required to await response from state police or local departments with a caged car. My safety along with other officers with the Westfield Boro Police are jeopardized when required to work without a caged car. Also the amount of emergency equipment we carry in the car when on duty is needed at a moment's notice and is impossible to carry in our personal vehicles. Tonight the Westfield council voted to put the second car up for bid (for sale) without fully understanding the need or facts supporting why the second car is needed. The cost to keep is minimal both cars are fully paid for. Again this is not a convenience item it is a safety item, your safety my safety and the students safety. Please find time to make you word heard!!! Remember they are elected by us the people. Share this as much as possible I'm not letting this happen without making noise.
Small list of items we have in the trunk of our primary car, 1 full BLS medic kit with O2, AED, airway bag with suction, BVM, and narcan. Vehicle unlock kits 2 different ones, an active shooter bag, toolbox with tools, jumper cables, evidence bags, fire extinguisher along with other items, inside the vehicle we have computer and most importantly a cage, also in our area portable radios vary rarely work, officers depend on the mobile radio and repeater to communicate with dispatch, none of us have a mobile radio in our personal cars. The police vehicles are our mobile office as well.

It makes no sense to sell the second car when we have two full time police officers. It is a safety issue for the public and the officers. I think it would be wise for the council to treat the police department like the professionals that they are and stop treating them like spoiled children asking for another toy.
I believe the 2nd car is needed. If the cop has to transport someone to jail or something we won't be left without a way for an officer to help if something serious should happen...I say I'd feel more secure with a second car than having to wait for psp to respond...
Given there have been several instances where there have been multiple calls at the same time, I don’t feel the officers should have to use their personal vehicles. If both cars are fully paid for, isn’t the officer’s and community’s safety worth the minimal cost to keep both cars?
This seems small but having a back up seems like a deterrent for criminals. If we're being honest there is a huge drug problem in the area and taking away resources from law enforcement is not the answer.
I have seen the second car used in many occasions. From backing up the on duty officer to taking a second call while the on duty officer is taking another call. The police dept uses the second car to help with traffic control during events in Westfield also. We the residents of Westfield need to stand up for our OFFICERS IN BLUE!
I can't believe you're even considering getting rid of it. The safety of our officers alone is reason enough to keep the car. This town is NOT safe anymore! The extra car is a MUST! I believe the second patrol car should be kept to optimize the highest standard of safety for our officers and the people of this community. I live in Westfield and am also the wife of Chief Niles. I have seen first hand the effect of not having two vehicles to work with. I have seen my husband take our personal vehicle and respond to calls so many times in the past. This is not only ridiculous but also very unsafe. Wikipedia states this: A police car (also called a police cruiser, prowler, squad car, radio car or radio mobile patrol (RMP) ) is a ground vehicle used by police for transportation during patrols and to enable them to respond to incidents. Typical uses of a police car include transporting officers so they can reach the scene of an incident quickly, transporting and temporarily detaining suspects in the back seats, as a location to use their police radio or laptop or to patrol an area, all while providing a visible deterrent to crime. Police cars typically have rooftop flashing lights, a siren, and emblems or markings indicating that the vehicle is a police car. Some police cars may have reinforced bumpers and alley lights, for illuminating darkened allies. Placing officers in vehicles also allows them to carry more equipment, such as automated external defibrillators for people in cardiac arrest or road cones for traffic obstructions, and allows for more immediate transport of suspects to holding facilities. No where in this definition can I relate the safety of having a patrol car to what they are subjected to when they are forced to use their personal vehicles. Our personal vehicle has also been used in the past because the departments only patrol car was in the garage due to a major break down or maintenance work. Other times it was because Chief Niles was home when a call came in for back up and he was forced to respond with his personal vehicle. It is ludicrous to think that any on-duty officer would be asked to use their personal vehicle as a backup patrol car, should the one and only patrol car either be in use or be out of service for repairs. Not only is this completely unprofessional, it is asking too much of an individual officer whose family may need their vehicle for any given reason.
